Stephentown is one of those places that feels tucked away in the best possible sense—quiet, rural, and close to the Massachusetts border, but with more within reach than you might expect.

Just over the line from Columbia County in southeastern Rensselaer County, Stephentown sits at a kind of upstate crossroads: the Berkshires to the east, Columbia County to the south, Albany and Troy to the northwest, and a wide mix of ski mountains, farm stands, hiking trails, restaurants, and cultural destinations all within an easy drive.

It’s the kind of place where a day can unfold in a few different directions. You might start with a morning on the slopes at Jiminy Peak, stop for lunch in New Lebanon, wander through a museum in the Berkshires, or head toward Chatham for dinner and a movie. Living here means having quiet at home, with plenty to do just beyond it.

To help map out the best of Stephentown and the surrounding area, we turned to Upstate Curious agent Jessica Scott, a Columbia County local (and the photographer who took the bucolic photo above!) with deep knowledge of this part of the region and the small-town favorites, scenic stops, and day-trip destinations nearby.

Under 10 Minutes

• Jiminy Peak Mountain Resort for skiing, snowboarding, mountain biking, hiking, and the alpine coaster.

• Four Fat Fowl, an award-winning artisanal creamery known for its exceptional cheeses, including St. Stephen, named after the town itself.

10–15 Minutes

• Cinch 'em Up Stables offers guided horseback trail rides, pony rides, and 430 acres of open fields and wooded trails with sweeping Berkshire views.

• Norte Azul Cantina for casual Mexican fare. The Norte Nachos are a local favorite.

• Blueberry Hill Market Cafe in New Lebanon, a beloved spot for breakfast and lunch. The bacon-stuffed waffle is worth the trip.

20–30 Minutes

• The Clark Art Institute, one of the Berkshires' premier cultural destinations, celebrated for its remarkable collection of Impressionist and American art.

• Guido's Fresh Marketplace, a Berkshire institution known for local produce, specialty foods, prepared meals, and regional products.

• Ooms Conservation Area for easy walking trails, birdwatching, and wide-open Columbia County views.

35–45 Minutes

• Tanglewood, the summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Bring a picnic, spread out on the lawn, and enjoy an evening under the stars.

• MASS MoCA, one of the nation's leading contemporary art museums, known for its large-scale installations and year-round programming.

• Head to Chatham for dinner at Bimi's Canteen and a movie at the historic Crandell Theatre.

Easy Access to Amtrak

Stephentown is conveniently positioned between two Amtrak stations:

• Approximately 30 minutes to Albany–Rensselaer Station

• Just under an hour to Hudson Station

Whether you're spending the day on the slopes, exploring the Berkshires' cultural institutions, or enjoying a leisurely dinner in Chatham, Stephentown offers a surprisingly wide range of experiences within an easy drive of home.
