The Bali House: Handcrafted Tranquility in Rosendale
Set on 7.5 private, wooded acres, The Bali House is a rare blend of Balinese craftsmanship and Catskills serenity. Originally built by artisans in Bali and reassembled in Rosendale, this sculptor-designed estate centers around a swimmable, spring-fed pond and lush natural surroundings.
The 2-bed, 2-bath main home features soaring ceilings, heated floors, and rich natural materials like teak and bamboo for a spa-like feel. A separate 2-bed, 1-bath guest house adds flexibility for guests, rentals, or creative work.
Just minutes from charming Rosendale and 80 miles from NYC, this one-of-a-kind retreat offers peaceful living with easy access to culture, dining, and adventure.
The Bali House is the vision of renowned sculptor Hans Van de Bovenkamp, celebrated internationally for his large-scale public works and spiritual design sensibility. In 1993, Hans began a bold and inspired project: to design a home embodying harmony, artistry, and tranquility. He commissioned local artisans in Ubud, Bali to build it by hand—honoring traditional techniques and sacred materials.
Once completed, the structure was meticulously deconstructed, shipped halfway around the world, and lovingly reconstructed in Tillson, NY, on land chosen for its natural beauty and peaceful energy. Set beside a spring-fed pond and surrounded by forest, the site perfectly echoed the spirit of its Balinese origin.
For the past eight years, the current owners have cherished this singular creation—hosting friends, family, and guests in a home that’s as much a work of art as it is a peaceful retreat. Archival photos show Hans and a team of dedicated local builders bringing this vision to life.
